I'd forgotten about them being longer episodes. Oh well, as long as they DO release them, that's the main thing I suppose.

I've just been watching that brilliant episode 'A Day in the Country" ;D I love the way Mabel gets to come along & remembers all the things that Mrs Lipton forgot! I was also wondering if anyone knows where the outdoor scenes were filmed, as the area nr London where I'm from is often used for filming tv shows!?

I see that Oh Doctor Beeching is out in a month or so. I would have thought that YRML should have been given priority over this as it seems to be more popular? People seem to like it more too.

Oh Doctor Beeching! was a strange one - I remember an article in the paper when the first series came out that said one episode had got to no. 10 in the overall ratings so it was obviously popular, at least initially, but I think the BBC seemed to quietly drop it after only 2 series so unless there was some other reason I can only assume the ratings dropped or they just didn't want to support it for some reason. Personally I felt it was too slow and not enough laughs- the writing was just wearing too thin and the setting didn't have enough storyline potential. I won't be buying the DVD box set - Oh Doctor Beeching! was no comedy classic.

I think the problem with ODB is simply that the scripts were not good enough. David Croft was writing with a new partner in the form of Richard Spendlove and I think the scripting missed the genius of Jimmy Perry who would always formulate the scene during the Perry and Croft years setting up the structure on which to work. ODB has it's moments but not enough of them. Pity as the setting is beautiful. We never really come to care about the characters as much as those in HDH and YRML, that is because they are never fleshed out properly. They had Su Pollard for instance going from potty slapstick to a crying scene with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. It just didn't work without the intracacies of plotting and character development. They were all a bit one dimensional. Stephen Lewis' standard gurning was very wearing after a few episodes. The pilot episode (which Jimmy Perry did have a hand in scripting) showed the potential of the series but it was never fully realised thereafter. Certainly no match for the mighty YRML.
