For what it's worth, I think that YOU RANG M'LORD ? is the finest series ever by Perry and Croft. It was an attempt to do something slightly different from them, and the characters are all a joy to watch. The setting of 12 Palmerston Grove is magnificent and I believe it was a very expensive series to make. The episode "A Day In The Country" has to rate as one of my favourite episodes of any comedy ever. The real star of the show has to be Jeffrey Holland as James Twelvetrees, whose performance is magnificent throughout. His performance makes all the other characters work I think and shows just what a first rate actor J.H. really is. If only we could get it out on video/DVD. My tapes are worn out with use too, I contacted UK Gold/Drama who say they have no plans for a repeat in the forseeable future ! Shame.

YRML was a hugely underrated show, storylines were allowed to develop over a few episodes and that was one of its main strengths.
My favourite episode is possibly "Requiem For A Parrot".

Hi Robbie Yeah I have to agree You Rang is great, shame I haven't seen it for years as I haven't been able to see it but I am soooo looking forward to the DVD release!!! Totally agree Jeffrey Holland is a great actor, seen him on stage a couple of times and I find he has a great chemistry with his audience.

As I recall, his character in You Rang and those played by Su P and Paul S were quite similar to the roles they played in Hi-de-Hi! Mr Twelvetrees was always being called things like stuffy and boring - but he wasn't at at all, he was just really nice, I always felt really sorry for him, lol! ;D My 2nd fave HDH cast member is Ruth Madoc - does anyone have any idea why she wasn't in You Rang and ODB too??

I think there probably just wasn't a character for her - or perhaps Ruth didn't want to move onto YRML? Felix Bowness, Ben Aris, Barry Howard and the Webb Twins all of course had minor parts in various episodes of YRML, and in the other direction, Bill Pertwee, Perry Benson and Frank Williams appeared in episodes of Hi-de-Hi!
Alf Stokes was a lot darker and shadier than Ted Bovis - Ted might have been a bit dodgy but not to the extent of Alf's deceptions!

From what I can gather Dan is right on the subject of Ruth not appearing in YRM. Jimmy and David had already got the basics of the new show worked out during the penultimate series of HDH. There is no character Ruth could have reasonably played. P & C will not use people for the sake of using them, they have to be right for the character. Everyone was spot on in YRM so they obviously knew what they were doing. Ruth was indeed fantastic in HDH and her Gladys one of the lynchpins of the series. She's a great actress.

I love Gladys' deadpan expressions and the comments she comes out with, they're hilarious!!! ;D It's a shame she hasn't done more TV comedy, but I think u are right that there wouldn't really have been a part she could've played in You Rang.
Think Ted could sometimes be a bit of a meanie too, but as You Rang is more of a comedy-drama there was obviously lots more scope to develop that type of character. I think all the characters were excellent! ;D

Just to let you all know that in the absence of official YOU RANG dvd releases (and it looks as if it will be some time before the proposed HDH and Beeching releases see the light of day never mind YRML) a guy called Chris in Australia has transferred good quality VHS copies to DVD. Anybody interested in obtaining copies should contact him at meldrum@yobo.com.au

I wish they would release YRML on dvd as I only have series 1,3 & 4 on video. I don't think I taped Series 2 for some strange reason.

Hi there Gary! ;D I wish they'd release it too, it's been sooooooooooo long since I saw it! Sadly I don't have any on video as I've only recently become a huge Hi-de-hi etc fan. I emailed Chris in Australia but he's not got back to me yet, I think maybe I should've contacted him sooner (but couldn't aford to buy any before Christmas, lol!!) Hope he still has some left...!

???I don't think YRML even got in Britains Favourite Sitcom which I find disgraceful. I just cannot understand why it is so overlooked, when you see some of the programmes in there.

;DGreat to hear that a DVD set seems to be looming in the "not too distant future" according to the Su Pollard site. Hope they release it as Series 1 & 2, and then Series 3 & 4. It would only take a couple of releases then! Here's hoping.

From a commercial point of view, I would think it highly likely that series one will be released on it's own. Each episode is 50 minutes not the normal 30 (with the pilot weighing in at an hour) so I think 6 episodes over three discs will be the format most likely chosen by the BBC. I could be wrong but I can't see them putting out a DVD set that features so much screen time as to cover series one and two. Besides if they release four sets they will make more money that way !
