As I watch the Hi-de-Hi episodes I notice a few of the major characters left rather suddenly.
Anyone know why Barry, Mr. Patridge and Jeffrey Fairbrother left? Was it the actors choice, or were the characters written out, and if so, why?
Also, why were the Yellowcoats changed so frequently? It seems only Sylvia was retained throughout the series. Again, did the actors chose to leave or did they just write them out? I feel a bit sorry for some of the characters in the earlier episodes, as they were never really given the chance to see if their characters worked.

Simon Cadell decided to leave. I don't know whether he got a proper farewell in the series. I don't think he did as I seem to remember Gladys, Ted and Spike waiting at the train station and they heard Jeffrey wasn't coming back. Then we were introduced to Clive. The memory is a little hazy so I could be wrong. I guess Simon didn't want to be typecast. Leslie Dwyer who played Mr Partridge died I think. Not sure on Barry he was in it for a fair while think he might've been ill.

Thanks for the update, terribly sad to hear that Leslie Dwyer may have died, I did wonder if perhaps that was the reason given his age. They didn't give Mr. Fairbrother a send-off at all as such, your memory is correct, it was an episode on the first day of the next season when they all discovered he wasn't coming back. Still, they did devote that entire episode to the impact of him leaving, particularly on Gladys, and we didn't see his replacement until the next episode!

Leslie Dwyer had to pull out midway through filming Clive Dempster's first series though illness, and died not long afterwards (about a year) as I recall.
It's very noticable watching that series, that he appears in all of the location filming (which is always shot first), but none of the indoor scenes. Excuses are made as to his whereabouts and scenes that were obviously intended for him and Fred are replaced by strange encounters between Fred and plumbers, etc.
He was written out properly at the start of the following series in the opening 2 episodes 'It's Murder' and 'Who Killed Mr Partridge?', where it transpired he had gotten fed up and moved away, leaving a rather grisly mystery behind.

Why did Barry leave? I gather he was ill but he's still alive today I think...

That's good to hear. Anyone know why he left then? I did hear he was ill but maybe he had had enough.

Barry Howard ("Barry Stuart-Hargreaves") was written out of the show when the producers decided to inject new life into the series. As far as I'm aware -and I remember reading an interview given by Howard just after his departure- he did not ask to leave Hi-De-Hi! His replacement, Ben Aris ("Julian Dalrymple-Sykes") had appeared in a couple (?) of episodes before Howard left as 'Barry's' rival, both as a ballroom dancer and a love interest for "Yvonne".
Leslie Dwyer left the show during Series 5 (quite early on, as it happens, but his appearances were filmed well in advance). Sadly, he died the following year.
Simon Cadell ("Jeffrey Fairbrother") left the show after the fourth series to "persue other interests". Shortly after leaving, he was diagnosed with an "illness" (sorry about the vagueness here, but I'm unsure of what exactly the 'illness' was). Unfortunately, the illness put limits on his acting career.
With the exception of Betty, Sylvia and April (from Series 5 onwards), the Yellowcoats were seen as "secondary performers", therefore, their arrival/departure could happen without proper explanation. Linda Regan ("April"), Laura Jackson ("Dawn") and Julie Christian-Young ("Babs") joined the cast half way through the show's run just to freshen the cast up a bit.

The reason behind Barry Howard's leaving were well-documented in the press at the time. He had a drink problem and was becoming very unreliable - turning up drunk at rehearsals etc.

I don't remember any illness until much later on in the 90's, when he developed (and ultimately died from) cancer. At the time he wanted to get back to the stage, but still did the occasional film and TV here and there. People will remember him in "Blott on the Landscape" in particular, which included a number of rather rude scenes! S.
