Every week we will host discussion on a particular episode, which should keep the forum busy for at least a year!!
We start obviously with the one that started it all - The Pilot. Anyone want to get the ball rolling on this one?

As far as pilots go, I feel it is a good one. Unlike other pilots (Porridge, Open All Hours) the continuity is fine when it goes onto the series. All the charcters are well established as well, considering it is the first time the actors have played them.

I didn't think the pilot looked very promising at all! Definitely fewer laughs per minute than in the other episodes. But it did establish the characters and the situation quite well, which I suppose is what a pilot episode is for.

A pilot episode is generally to introduce the characters I guess always difficult to generate enough laughs whilst keeping the story flowing. I thought it was ok.

For a pilot episode it's pretty good - slow but it introduces the characters well and there's a few laughs in it. It would have been better with a good 5-10 minutes worth of scenes cut out, which added nothing and slowed it down. But there are genuinely good moments, particularly Gladys first meeting Jeffrey and Peggy's scene with Jeffrey in his chalet. I think it's more interesting to see how they initially pitched the characters, because they obviously decided to take them in a different direction in some cases. For example, when we meet Peggy she's quite flirty with Mr. Fairbrother and I think she was initially supposed to be a more cheeky, sexual character than the innocent girl who "saves herself for Mr. Right" in later episodes. Fred Quilly seemed a touch more aggressive with Ted than in later episodes. It also introduces a lot of important running themes- Ted's resentment of Mr. Fairbrother because he expected to be Entertainments Manager if he left, Mr. Fairbrothers reasons for taking the job in the first place, and what a pathetic figure Ted really was, about to get a break in Coronation Street but ultimately failing.
